The risks of wearing sunglasses without UV protection

On countless occasions we wonder whether the sunglasses we wear in our daily lives provide full protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation. These rays can cause painful and harmful consequences for our health. Therefore, it is always advisable to invest a little more money in UV sunglasses than to regret having purchased sunglasses with no protection at all for a lower price.

What are UV rays?

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is emitted by natural sources, such as the sun, and by artificial sources, such as artificial tanning beds. This type of radiation has a number of health benefits , such as vitamin D production. But too much of it can be very harmful, both to the skin itself and to our eyes.

Polarized glasses or UV protection?

Although we often confuse them, polarized glasses and glasses with UV protection are completely different, although the former should provide the same protection as the latter. Polarized glasses prevent glare, i.e. they protect against the annoyance of reflections from the sun's rays. They are usually a good choice because they improve visibility, but they do not provide 100% protection.

Sunglasses with UV protection protect you from this type of rays and therefore protect your eye health. Therefore, UV400 sunglasses will give you full protection. This figure means that the glasses will block UV rays with a wavelength of less than 400 nanometers. We find, then, that both types of sunglasses protect from completely different things.

Risks of not wearing UV-protective eyewear

There are several types of eye damage caused by UV rays and, therefore, by not wearing glasses with UV400 protection. Firstly, we find that the conjunctiva, cornea and lens are the parts of the eye that are most affected by this type of radiation. Secondly , there are the diseases that UV rays can cause: pinguecula (a benign yellowish lesion found in the white area of the eye), pterygium (a lesion that can affect the cornea and, therefore, vision) and photokeratitis (an eye disease that can cause great pain).
